So the UK government is getting really fr*cking serious about AI. Yes, £500m may not sound like much in the current funding atmosphere. However, if the excitement in the room last night was anything to go on, the vibes are going to take the initiative a long way. You can read about the reactions of the tech industry below, from founders to investors, but let me just give you a flavour of where this might be heading (and you can also check out my hastily put-together Instagram reel).
At a star-studded event last night at the place where Wayve literally builds its autonomous car systems, I saw something quite different come out of what are normally dead-on-arrival government initiatives. I saw a well-thought-out strategy that dovetails well with where the industry is at the moment. I saw a full-throated pitch for a new venture fund which — I predict — is probably going to end up being an anchor fund for many new UK startup fundraises.
And I saw something else interesting. An offer to international companies, particularly on talent visas, that is likely to turn the heads of several founders contemplating where to base themselves and their teams.
Yes, not everything is ironed out. But I see no reason why the Sovereign AI Unit won’t contribute in a tangible way to how the UK positions itself going forward. And I wouldn’t be surprised if some clever UK investors might use it to lure a few US founders over to this side of the Atlantic.
The fund also announced its first investments, which were particularly strong:
Callosum has systems-level software that makes diverse chip architectures work together, co-optimising workflows, models and silicon in real time.
Prima Mente is using AI to do things like unpacking DNA sequencing, gene expression and epigenetic regulation, to better understand and tackle brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
Doubleword helps businesses with the infrastructure needed for AI inference.
Cosine is a British sovereign AI frontier lab developing advanced models and coding agents for defence, national security and regulated industries where foreign-built AI is off the table.
Cursive is developing AI agents for behavioural prediction and long-horizon reasoning.
Odyssey is developing world models.
Twig Bio is developing CANOPY, a foundation model for AI-driven strain design in engineering biology and biomanufacturing.
What else are we up to?
