COMMENT:
Europe's cyber moment? Lessons from the PHP hack week from hell
By Mike Butcher
This week, PHP2Shell incident (yes, we’ve heard of PHP…) reminded us all that a software stack is only as safe as its oldest, and usually weakest, layer. Two critical flaws in the PHP interpreter let an attacker run code on a web server without logging in. The details leaked on 20 October, a day before PHP shipped fixes. All hell broke loose. PHP still runs vast swathes of the web, from WordPress shopfronts to SaaS back offices. Every version was exposed. Multiple websites had to be taken offline.
The lesson for European startups ought to be to treat security as a product feature from day one, even in the era of AI-assisted engineering. Luckily, Europe has the founders and, as this week showed, the capital to attack this problem.
On 22 October Amsterdam's Indurex raised €7 million for AI-native security of cyber-physical systems, less than nine months out of stealth. A day later Berlin's Cygrid emerged with €2.66 million led by Atlantic, with the Schwarz Group's D11Z joining. Its idea is to be a European alternative to US and Israeli AI identity security. Earlier this month Hadrian took €35.68 million for agentic offensive security.
The message, therefore, is that we can do this. So let’s get to work.
The Top Six stories in UK & European startups/VC this week
1. Legora raises $550M at an $8.8bn valuation, six months after its last round
The Stockholm legal-AI company's Series E was led by new investor Atreides Management, with Baron Capital, Capital Research and others joining. The valuation jumps from $5.6bn six months ago, and Legora says annual recurring revenue has passed $200M. The money will fund international expansion and what it calls its 'aOS', an agentic operating system for legal professionals.
Why it matters: In September Bloomberg reported talks to raise at least $300M at $8.5bn pre-money. So clearly, the final round ended up mush larger! Closing at $8.8bn post-money with $200M-plus ARR is very strong work. So much for everyone writing off ‘application layer’ AI startups a couple of years ago.

2. Pigment raises $250M at $2.3bn, the Scaleup Europe Fund's flagship software bet
The Paris business-planning company, which wants to replace Excel and PowerPoint in the finance office, raised a Series E led by the EU-backed €5bn Scaleup Europe Fund. It says annual recurring revenue has passed $100M and doubled again. Nvidia, which announced a planned stake last week, is also coming in, and Bloomberg reports Anthropic runs its financial planning on Pigment.
Why it matters: The Scaleup Europe Fund has gone from a policy announcement to leading a late-stage software round. That makes it a real source of European growth capital that founders can raise from, not just talk about.

3. Microsoft pulls out of Nscale's flagship UK data centre, while Anthropic talks up a second deal
Microsoft has abandoned its agreement to lease capacity at Nscale's Essex site, which ministers had hailed as the UK's largest AI data centre, citing concerns about power supply. Founder Josh Payne told staff demand remains 'insatiable', and the FT reports Anthropic is in talks with Nscale for a second multibillion-dollar computing deal. The FT called it a pre-IPO reality check for data-centre hopefuls.
Why it matters: Nscale filed for a US listing at up to $35bn only weeks ago. Losing an anchor tenant over grid power shows the Britain's AI-infrastructure plans are not where they should be.
Why is the UK in this hole? The facts are that the UK still gets about a third of its electricity from gas, mostly because of decisions made decades ago. Renewables now generate slightly more than half, and nuclear is shrinking. After electricity was privatised under Thatcher's Conservative government, companies switched from coal to gas, thus locking in gas dependence. In 2015, David Cameron's Tory government introduced a de facto ban on building any new onshore wind farms, and later ones were reversed or reinstated several times over. They were only lifted by the Labour government in 2024. The UK's interconnector capacity with the continent could roughly double or triple by about 2032, depending on which projects go ahead on schedule. Maybe we’ll be back in the EU by then?

4. Blackwall raises $100M at $2.2bn, becoming Europe's most valuable cybersecurity scaleup
AVP led the Estonia-founded web-traffic security company's Series C, with Dawn Capital, MMC Ventures and Tera Ventures following on. Blackwall had only joined Estonia's unicorn ranks last month and will expand into 12 regions as AI agents reshape web traffic.
Why it matters: Its valuation more than doubled in a month. Bot and agent traffic management has become a security category in its own right.

5. Croatia's Daytona becomes a unicorn with a $60M Series B for AI-agent cloud infrastructure
FirstMark led the round at a $1bn valuation, taking total funding to $91M. Angels include Patrick Collison, Adam D'Angelo, Tobi Lütke, Olivier Pomel and Aravind Srinivas. It is the third unicorn from the Croatian ecosystem.
Why it matters: Sandboxed infrastructure for agents to run code is one of the fastest-growing picks-and-shovels categories in AI. A Zagreb-founded company winning with a US tier-one lead is pretty good, huh?

6. OMass Therapeutics raises €275M (£230M) in an oversubscribed Series C
The Oxford spin-out, which develops small-molecule drugs against validated targets, closed an oversubscribed round co-led by new investors Bain Capital Life Sciences, Forbion and Novo Holdings, with Janus Henderson, SV Health and Jefferson Life Sciences participating.
Why it matters: Two weeks after Forbion closed €2.3bn, more money is flowing into clinical-stage UK biotech. Combined with Nouscom's $135M and Microbiotica's €42M this week, it was a strong week for European life sciences.

UK-based tech companies raised almost €12 billion across 188 deals, accounting for around 43 per cent of the €27.8 billion invested across Europe during the quarter. Germany ranked second with approximately €4.9 billion across 114 deals, while France followed with €4.0 billion from 49 deals.
