Headline, a VC based out of Germany that spans Europe and the US (some time ago it was called eventures, btw), has produced a very interesting piece of research, dubbed The AI Europe 100. The research was written by Jonathan Userovici, Astrid Moullé-Berteaux, and Cyprien Benoist. The full presentation is here.
The research proposes a new way to classify AI companies based not on sector, but on what they sell, what they replace and how they build defensibility.
It divides the market into six “breeds”:
Frontier Labs sell intelligence itself through foundation models, but face enormous capital needs, low margins and rapidly shifting leadership.
Velocity Racers are fast-growing, self-serve AI applications with strong distribution but weak retention and limited structural moats.
System Builders replace core enterprise software and become defensible through workflow integration, compliance and high customer retention.
Outcome Engines automate labour-intensive functions and charge for results, with value determined by how far they can reduce human involvement.
Stack Enablers provide infrastructure, data and developer tools, benefiting from overall AI usage but facing pressure from vertical integration.
Intelligent Hardware combines AI with robotics, defence and physical systems, requiring heavy capital but creating durable barriers through manufacturing, certification and government contracts.
The framework argues that capital alone does not create a moat, with the strongest defensibility coming from embedded workflows, proprietary data, operational expertise, integrations, certifications and manufacturing capability. It also says some AI applications are evolving into enterprise platforms, while warning that many companies are priced according to the business model they hope to reach rather than the one they currently have.
According to the research’s classification, Europe is strongest in System Builders, selected Frontier Labs, AI applications and something it calls ‘intelligent hardware’, which is often defence. However, it remains weaker in AI infrastructure and agentic services and continues to suffer from a major late-stage funding gap compared with the US (something the whole industry knows).
However, at Pathfounders, we decided to take the list and re-engineer it back into traditional classifications, just to make it a little more decipherable, and used an AI to quickly come up with a (hopefully accurate) listing which exposes which investors are backing each company, and, where possible, how much has been raised.
